Rooted in Jesus in prison

Following the Rooted in Jesus conferences in March 2009, a prison chaplain began using the course in a Kenyan prison. In April he wrote as follows:

Greetings in the name most High, the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. How are you? I hope that you and your team are doing quite fine. I am fine here at home and work, my workload has sincerely almost weighed me down but for the good. My ministry is superb and as you know I deal with people who have been rejected, discarded and dumped in prison by the society. Rehabilitating this breed is costly and needs a lot of grace.

I am sorry my sister for calling off your coming to prison during your visit. It wasn't safe there. There were riots over them being beaten up by the guards (warders) and there was a lot of turmoil and unrest. I want to share with you a testimony of what happened that day; you remember praying shortly with me over the phone? Ten minutes after that prayer there was calm and immediately we got a letter of transfer of the officer in-charge who was actually the cause of the problems in this station. The testimony is we have an open door not only in this prison but also in all the prisons in Rift Valley. I was able to talk to the provincial prison commander and studied with him a copy of one of the books on Rooted in Christ and I was overjoyed that I shared a go on this programme.

In [this place] which now becomes the mother of other stations I have managed to train 8 men who have so far completed book one (1), we are not only looking for the knowledge on this but the impact of this messages both in person and the team at large. I have always wanted to write you on our progress, the team and other plans on introducing the course in other stations. One of the stations is Naivasha, which is a maximum security centre. It is the largest in East and Central Africa. I want to challenge you to pray for these programmes.

Before we introduce this programme, we were not able to sincerely fellowship but today we study, pray and fellowship. We meet three times a week and looking forward to starting other new classes by the trained team.

May the Lord God bless you all time for opening your hands for this noble task. Pray for me and the counselling classes that I have, that God will give me the wisdom to get them back to God, for it is He who created them can change them.

God bless you.

Your faithful Servant,
Ole Sagana Merus

Our prayer is that we will be able to support the introduction of Rooted in Jesus to prisons throughout Kenya.
